When Krishna kept the Brajvasis on his youngest finger for seven days to avoid the torrential rains, and the gopikas lived happily in his shadow. On the seventh day, the Lord laid down Govardhan and ordered him to celebrate Annakoot by performing Govardhan Puja every year. Since then, this festival was celebrated in the name of Annakoot.

The story

There is a folklore in relation to Govardhan Puja. The legend is that Devraj Indra was proud. Lord Krishna, who is an avatar of the leeladhari Sri Hari Vishnu himself, created a play to break the pride of Indra. It was like this in the Lord's Leela that one day he saw that all the Brijwasis are making excellent dishes and preparing for some worship. Shri Krishna asked Mayaya Yashoda with great naivety, "Mayya, these people are preparing for whose worship" Hearing the words of Krishna, Maya Boli Lalla, we are preparing Annakoot for the worship of Devraj Indra. On the saying of Maiya, Shri Krishna said, "Why do we worship Indra?" Maia said that he rains which produces food, our cows get fodder from them. Lord Shri Krishna said that we should worship Govardhan Parvat because our cows graze there, due to this, Govardhan Parvat is venerable and Indra never gives darshan and is angry even if he does not worship, hence worshiping such arrogant Should not do.
All of Leeladhari's Leela and Maya worshiped Govarnaghan mountain instead of Indra. Devraj Indra deemed it an insult and started torrential rain. Seeing the rains like the holocaust, all the Brajwasis started cursing Lord Krishna, saying that all of them have done this by obeying it. Then Muralidhar put Murali in the waist and lifted the whole Govardhan mountain on his little finger and called all the Brijwasis to take refuge in it with their cow and calf. Seeing this Leela of Indra Krishna and became angry, it eventually rained more. To honor Indra, then Shri Krishna told Sudarshan Chakra that you should stay on top of the mountain and control the speed of rain and told Sheshnag that you make a ridge and stop the water from coming towards the mountain.
Indra kept on torrential rain for seven consecutive days when he realized that there could be no ordinary person to compete with him, so he reached Brahma Ji and narrated all the accounts. Brahma ji told Indra that the Krishna you are talking about is a visible part of Lord Vishnu and is the complete Purushottam Narayan. Hearing this from the mouth of Brahma, Indra was extremely ashamed and said to Shri Krishna that Lord I could not recognize you, so I sat erratically. You are kind and kind too, so forgive my mistake. After this, Devraj Indra worshiped Muralidhar and offered it to him.
Since this mythological event Govardhan Puja started to be performed. Brijwasis worship Govarghan mountain on this day. On this day, cow bulls are bathed and colored and a new rope is inserted around their neck. Cows and bulls are fed by mixing jaggery and rice.
